Julio Ruiz, one of Almeria’s famous flamenco dancers, was invited to Teatro Flamenco Sevilla to present his new show, “Touch a Man”
Julio Ruiz, born in Almeria in 1993, has forged an outstanding career for himself in the flamenco and Spanish traditional dance scene. Over the span of his career he has won a variety of prizes honouring his exceptional talent and has taken his place as an outstanding flamenco dancer on a national scale.

His skill and passion have given him significant recognition, including the Best Flamenco Dancer Award in the 26th edition of the Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition in Madrid in 2017 and the “Explosive” Award and the Fernan Gomez Cultural Centre De La Villa Prize in the 2022 edition of this competition.
This renowned flamenco dancer has travelled far and wide with national and international tours, including USA, Brazil and Hungary. His participation in prestigious festivals such as the Jerez Festival and the Flamenco Bienal in Seville has helped to consolidate his position as a prominent figure in the flamenco world. He has proved his versatility as an artist having formed part of the dance company La Fura del Baus in its adaptation of Manuel de Falla’s El Amor Brujo and having presented various different shows, such as Retazos in 2014, Sitio Donde Te Hablé in 2017, 1993 and Bula in 2020.
Teatro Flamenco Sevilla is lucky to count on Julio Ruiz’s performances as part of our cast of flamenco artists in our daily, live flamenco show in Seville, Passion. He also dedicated a few minutes of his time to answer a few of our questions, allowing him the opportunity to share his experiences in our flamenco theatre.
How has your experience in Teatro Flamenco Sevilla been?
My experience in the Teatro Flamenco Sevilla has been really great because I have met up with many friends and colleagues. I was really keen to visit this flamenco theatre. I am familiar with Teatro Flamenco Madrid, and soon I will be appearing at Teatro Flamenco Málaga but I have never had the opportunity to be here at Teatro Flamenco Sevilla before and it has been a really positive experience. It is a really exciting flamenco show.
What is special about Teatro Flamenco Sevilla?
The difference between Teatro Flamenco Sevilla and other flamenco venues is performing in a theatre and the freedom it gives you to create and share your performance with colleagues. It is a unique space where music, dance and song conspire to inspire both artists and audience creating a magic atmosphere of pure flamenco.
What are your next projects?
From next week I will be performing at Teatro Flamenco Madrid. I will continue to tour with my most recent show, Touch A Man. In April I will perform in Teatro Flamenco Málaga.
Touch A Man: The latest flamenco show from Julio Ruiz
Touch A Man is the most recent flamenco show presented by Julio Ruiz in the Lilian Baylis Studio. It explores the themes of masculinity and emotional barriers.
In this flamenco show, Ruiz explores the complexities of masculinity and emotional barriers, presenting the concept of masculinity as an obstacle that restricts emotions and contributes to the fear of physical contact. Julio Ruiz performs together with the choreographer and dancer, Javier de la Asunción, and both artists play two strangers who attempt to explore their desires and fears, highlighting the difficulty that some men face when they try to express affection and analysing the relation between aggression and masculinity. Inspired by personal experiences, this show also focuses on the need to accept diversity within the concept of flamenco dance.
Julio Ruiz’s appearance on stage at Teatro Flamenco Sevilla and his continued participation in other leading theatres show his commitment with the evolution and growth of his art. Julio is an inspiring figure, who not only has contributed to enriching the flamenco experience but also has challenged convention, taking his creativity and passion to new horizons.
