Origins of the Cante Jondo flamenco style

Cante jondo comes from 19th Century Andalusia, where many musical and cultural traditions were born. Its origin is associated with popular Andalusian music and the influences of different cultures such as the gypsy, arabic and jewish cultures.

Cante Jondo means profound or deep singing and alludes to the emotional intensity of this style of flamenco. In its lyrics, the cante jondo touches on death, lost love, sadness and solitude which makes it a powerful medium for expressing human suffering. 

Characteristics of Cante Jondo

One of the most outstanding characteristics of the cante jondo is its melodic interpretation. It is often played without instrumental accompaniment, which means that the voice of the flamenco singer shines bright. The performance of the cante jondo is based on a very special vocal technique, where the voice is used as an instrument that transmits the depth of emotions.
