Early career of flamenco singer Marcos Martínez in Barcelona

Marcos Martínez was born in Barcelona, where he began singing at the age of 16 in academies specialising in flamenco guitar and dance. His early development focused on singing to accompany dancers, an essential skill for any flamenco singer, requiring strong rhythm (compás), adaptability and musical sensitivity.

He later trained at the renowned Taller de Música, studying with guitarist Juan Ramón Caro. This period provided him with a solid musical foundation and a broader understanding of flamenco from both academic and practical perspectives.

Marcos Martínez in Seville: training and artistic growth

In 2017, he moved to Seville after being awarded an Acciona scholarship to study at one of Spain’s leading flamenco training institutions.

There, he trained with respected flamenco masters such as José de la Tomasa, Juan José Amador and Liliana Aracil. At the same time, he worked as an assistant in classes led by leading artists including Pedro Sierra, Rubén Olmo, María Moreno and Pastora Galván.

His commitment to teaching has been a key part of his career. He has worked as a flamenco singing teacher in a performing arts school and later became co-director of his own academy, demonstrating a strong dedication to passing flamenco on to new generations.

Alongside his performance work, Marcos has also pursued in-depth theoretical study of flamenco with leading figures such as José Mayo and José Luis Ortiz Nuevo. This academic focus strengthens his artistic approach and deepens his understanding of traditional flamenco styles.

International flamenco and recognition

Marcos Martínez has performed at major flamenco festivals both in Spain and internationally. Notably, he appeared at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla in 2018 as part of La Roda del Viento, a production by David Dorantes.

In the world of flamenco tablaos, where performances are intimate, demanding and deeply expressive, his talent has become increasingly recognised.

His flamenco singing skill has also been acknowledged through several awards. In 2017, he won First Prize at the Talento Flamenco Naranjito de Triana competition for soleá, one of the most prestigious recognitions in his career.

He has been a finalist in competitions such as El Candil and the La Llagosta Flamenco Competition in Barcelona, as well as receiving Talento Flamenco awards for cantiñas in Cádiz and granaínas in Granada.

These achievements highlight both his command of different flamenco styles (palos) and his ability to interpret traditional flamenco singing with a distinctive voice.
