Palmira Durán: a life dedicated to flamenco
The dedication of a bailaora who leaves her mark on both the national and international scene
In the world of flamenco there are some artists that leave an indelible mark with their passion, skill and commitment. Palmira Durán is one of these flamenco artists. From a young age she has shown her deep love for flamenco, this art form deep-rooted in Spanish culture. At Teatro Flamenco Sevilla, where we are pleased to welcome and appreciate some of the great flamenco artists of the moment, Palmira stands out as one of the most complete and committed flamenco dancers of her generation, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary flamenco. Through her power on the stage and her dedication as a teacher she has elevated the essence of pure flamenco in Spain and beyond Spanish borders.
Palmira Durán: origins of a flamenco dancer
Although she was born in Palma de Mallorca, Palmira Durán has Andalusian roots with family in Cordoba and Sevilla and has always felt the call of flamenco deep in her soul. When she was six she took her first flamenco dancing steps with the flamenco dance teacher, Rocio Rodríguez, who trained with the legendary Matilde Coral. From this moment on, Palmira didn’t stop learning and perfecting her flamenco dancing technique, submerging herself completely in flamenco and Spanish dance.
At 18 years old, determined to continue developing as a flamenco dancer, Palmira Durán moved to Sevilla. There she continued her training at the Vanesa Valero Dance School, under the guidance of the former Spanish National Ballet, Francis Núñez. The capital of Andalusia, birthplace of flamenco, was the perfect stage for Palmira to absorb the richness and intensity of this art.
However, her desire to learn and improve took her to Madrid, where she consolidated her training in the prestigious Marta De La Vegga dance school, gaining her Diploma in Flamenco and Spanish Dance. This academic achievement not only underlines her talent, but also her discipline and dedication.
Palmira Durán: flamenco success
Throughout her career, Palmira Durán has worked with some of the most influential names in flamenco. She learned from such outstanding artists as Concha Jareño, Manuel Ríos, Alfonso Lora and Adrián Santana, amongst others. This training has allowed her to develop a unique style, which combines impeccable technique with a whirlwind expressivity, connecting audiences all over the world.
Her talent has been recognised in different competitions, standing out as a runner-up in many important flamenco contests winning many national prizes that proves her skill as a flamenco dancer and choreographer.Amongst her most important awards are the Second Prize in the 3rd edition of the Tablao Villa Rosa Flamenco Dance Competition and First Prize in the Best Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography category in the 2nd Tetuán District Choreography Contest.
Palmira Durán has also taken flamenco shows overseas, in 2012 she travelled to Israel to join the flamenco dance corps of the Opera Carmen under the direction of Carlos Vilán. A year later she was invited as a guest artist to Japan to the flamenco venue, Spanish Tapas Bar Baila in Himeji and in 2014 she performed in Dubai as part of the group Tablao Flamenco at the restaurant Seville’s.
In addition to her career as a flamenco dancer, Palmira Durán stands out as a flamenco dance teacher, sharing her expertise and knowledge with new generations of flamenco dancers. From 2013 she has given classes in a wide range of flamenco dance academies in Madrid, amongst them the Virginia Recio School of Dance, Tarantos Dance School and Relevé School of Dance, where she has played a key role in the training of future flamenco dancing talents.
