José Tejada Martín (Marchena, November 1903 – Seville, December 1976), artistically known as Pepe Marchena or El Niño de Marchena, is one of the most influential figures in 20th-century flamenco.
His career developed mainly during the period known as ópera flamenca, a time when cante jondo expanded into theatres, recording sessions and mass audiences, drastically transforming the role and perception of the best flamenco singers.
Marchena stood out not only for his voice and his mastery of styles such as fandangos, tarantas and malagueñas, but also for his ability to innovate within flamenco. His smooth, highly ornamented style brought flamenco singing to new audiences and venues, breaking with certain traditional conventions and appealing to a broader public.
Early steps in flamenco singing
Pepe Marchena was born into a humble family in the town of Marchena, in Seville. His passion for flamenco singing appeared at a very early age, when he began performing in local taverns and bars, earning a few coins while nurturing his love for arte jondo.
His natural talent soon led him to more formal flamenco venues. Marchena made his professional debut in Madrid around 1920, where his voice and fresh style quickly captured public attention. The city became a key turning point in his career, and he soon recorded his first discs, consolidating his artistic presence.

One of Pepe Marchena’s most recognised achievements was the creation of a new flamenco style (palo), the colombiana, part of the flamenco songs known as cante de ida y vuelta, Spanish flamenco styles that travelled to the new world and returned rejuvenated by American influences into a new flamenco style.
Beyond this, Marchena was a pioneer in several innovations: he was among the first to use orchestral accompaniment in flamenco singing; he introduced recitative elements and more elaborate vocal structures, and he transformed the stage presence of the flamenco singer. He was also one of the first to perform standing and to wear attire that was unconventional for the time.
These groundbreaking elements sparked mixed reactions among flamenco purists, but they undoubtedly contributed to the spread and popularisation of flamenco beyond its traditional settings.
Tours, performances and media presence
During the 1920s and 1930s, El Niño de Marchena undertook numerous tours across Spain and abroad, showcasing flamenco to venues, competitions and festivals. He also appeared in theatrical and early film productions, further enhancing his fame and consolidating his role within ópera flamenca.
His show Ópera Flamenca was pioneering in integrating singing, guitar and dance into larger-scale productions, breaking down barriers between traditional flamenco and theatrical performance.
Even during the Spanish Civil War, Marchena remained active, performing concerts and flamenco recitals and adapting to difficult circumstances in order to keep the art alive.

Pepe Marchena is remembered as one of the most influential flamenco singers of the 20th century, both for his technical mastery and for his stylistic contributions, which expanded the horizons of flamenco.
