Yus Wieggers: the Dutch guitarist whose passion for flamenco comes from the heart

In flamenco, some artists have the ability to capture your attention from the very first moment. Sometimes it is the flamenco singing, cante, sometimes the dance and sometimes, all it takes is the opening chords of a guitar to realise that you are listening to an extraordinary musician.

That is precisely what happens with Yus Wieggers, a flamenco guitarist who joined the Teatro Flamenco Sevilla cast on several occasions during 2025 and has returned to perform with us several times in 2026, once again captivating audiences with his interpretation of flamenco guitar in Pasión, the best flamenco show in Seville.

His sensitivity, flamenco guitar skill and the natural way in which he accompanies each performance make every return something to celebrate for flamenco aficionados.

From the Netherlands to the heart of flamenco

Yus Wieggers’ extraordinary story proves that flamenco knows no borders.

Born in the Netherlands, he discovered a deep connection with flamenco at a young age, one that would ultimately shape his entire professional career. What began as an admiration for flamenco guitar gradually became a vocation that led him to move to Andalusia to immerse himself further in this artistic language.

He learned from the best, taking classes with leading maestros and immersing himself in flamenco culture which allowed him to develop a solid, elegant style of toque (flamenco guitar playing) deeply respectful of tradition.

Today, he is a clear example of how flamenco continues to captivate artists from all over the world.

“The emotional heart of flamenco is singing” - Yus Wieggers

In various interviews, Yus Wieggers has explained that although his instrument is the guitar, he considers singing, cante, to be the true emotional heart of flamenco. This understanding of the art form also defines the way he plays.

His guitar never seeks to dominate, rather it does quite the opposite. It accompanies, supports and engages in dialogue with the singer and dancer, creating a balance that allows every performance to flow with complete naturalness.

It is precisely this sensitivity that makes his toque so special for those who have the opportunity to hear him perform live.

Flamenco guitar: much more than accompaniment

The guitar sets the rhythm, or compás as it is known in flamenco circles, accompanies the emotions of the cante (song) and maintains a constant dialogue with the dance.

Far from being simply an accompaniment, toque brings personality to every flamenco performance and plays a fundamental role in creating the atmosphere that makes flamenco unique.

Yus Wieggers understands this role perfectly. His playing combines technical precision and sensitivity with an extraordinary ability to listen and respond to the other artists, allowing the entire live flamenco performance to breathe as one.

An artist who always makes his mark at Teatro Flamenco Sevilla

Some artists remain particularly memorable long after the performance has ended. Yus Wieggers is one of them.

Every time he has been part of the Teatro Flamenco Sevilla cast, both during 2025 and throughout his various appearances in 2026, his guitar playing has managed to surprise even those with a deep knowledge of flamenco.

After performances, many audience members have told us just how impressed they were by his playing.

His elegance, sensitivity and ability to connect with the rest of the cast bring something special to every performance. For us, it is always a genuine pleasure to welcome him back to our stage.
