Here we will present a young, but professional, flamenco dancer, Macarena Ramirez.

Origins of Macarena Ramirez

Macarena Ramirez, originally from Chiclana de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz, began her training in flamenco dancing at the tender age of four years old in different flamenco dance academies in Chiclana. Her talent for flamenco dance was obvious from the very first steps, winning awards and prizes in various local contests. This early success led her to discover new opportunities and challenges in the world of flamenco. 

At the age of six years, Macarena broadened her horizons travelling to Jerez de la Frontera to study with the dancer, Maria del Mar Moreno. During this period, she became known in flamenco circles and in the prestigious Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, which gave her an important platform for her artistic development. At seven years old, her career was given an important boost when she received the prize for the Best Newcomer in Andalusia, consolidating her status as one of the best up-and-coming young flamenco dancing talents. She also won the TV young talent contest, “Veo Veo”, and appeared in the Canal Sur programme “Menuda Noche”.

Her participation in important flamenco events continued, in 2004 she performed in the Jerez Autumn Festival together with the maestro, José Zarzana, on the piano and the following year she took part in the recording of a record, Flamenco In Jerez, with the flamenco singer, José Antonio Zarzuela. In 2006, at the age of 12, she played the role of an adolescent Lola Flores in the film, “Lola, la película”. This role was a major highlight of her career and helped to raise her profile in flamenco circles and in the performing arts in general.

Consolidation of her professional career

From 2006, Macarena Ramirez’s career took off on an international scale. Se joined the Dance Company of Antonio El Pipa, performing at important venues in Costa Rica, Los Angeles, Ukraine, France, Portugal and Mexico. Her talent stood out in prestigious festivals such as the Festival de Jerez, La Union and the Bienal de Sevilla. In addition, her performance as a solo flamenco dancer in the show, “Puertas Adentro” by Antonio El Pipa and in the Festival de la Parpuja, where she shared the bill with famous names such as José Mercé and El Capullo de Jerez, highlighted her skill and versatility as a flamenco dancer. 

In 2011, Macarena took part in the film, “Vert, Je T’aime Vert,” directed by Caroline Chormienne, together with the renowned flamenco dancer, Cristina Hoyos. She also won the Jovenes Flamencos de Desencaja competition in Cádiz and was awarded second prize in the Andalusian final. She was the principal flamenco dancer in the Festival de Jerez in Antonio El Pipa’s show, Danzacalí and debuted her own flamenco show, “De Niña A Mujer,” in the Teatro Moderno of Chiclana de la Frontera. In addition, she was honoured to join the Sara Baras Dance Company for the show, “La Pepa”.

In 2012 she was invited to take part in the Flamenco Bienal in Sevilla with the show, “Flamenco Que Viene,” obtaining a nomination for Best Newcomer of the Festival de Jerez for her performance in “Viva Jerez” directed by Javier La Torra. The following year, she presented her flamenco show, “Recuerdos” at the Festival de Jerez and began an international tour in Germany, Netherlands, Prague and France.

Throughout her career, Macarena has received the best training from the grande maestros of flamenco such as Ruben Olmo, Ana María Bueno, Rocío Coral, Eva la Yerbabuena, Fuensanta La Moneta, Rocío Molina, Fernando Romero, Rafael Campayo, Currillo, Alicia Márquez, Isabel Bayón, Alfonso Losa and Carmen La Talegona. She has worked in the dance companies of Daniel Doña, Teresa Nieto and Sara Baras and has shared the stage with such outstanding flamenco artists as Mariana Cornejo, Carmen de la Jara, Rancapino, Antonio Reyes, Palmona Fantova, Andrés Peña, Pilar Ogalla and Javier Latorre. 

Her international projection has led her to perform in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, France and Prague, where she has performed with her own flamenco dance company. She is also well-known in flamenco circles all over the world for her flamenco dance masterclasses and workshops. At the present Macarenta shares her time between the performances for the María Pagés Flamenco Company and a busy schedule of solo performances, continuing her professional development and consolidating herself as a world-renowned flamenco dancer.
